A man has been charged with second-degree murder in a fatal stabbing Jan. 23 at Nanaimo’s Port Place Shopping Centre.
Emergency crews responded about 7 p.m. to a report that someone had walked into the downtown centre with an apparent stab wound.
Nanaimo RCMP said the stabbing occurred in the centre’s parking lot near London Drugs.
Bystanders administered first-aid before paramedics arrived to take over.
The victim, identified as Serguei Chiliakhov, was pronounced dead after being transported to hospital.
The B.C. Prosecution Service has approved charges against Sean Patterson.
Patterson is in custody and set for a Feb. 16 court appearance.
Police have not said if there is any connection between the two men.
“Given that this matter is now before the courts, police will not be providing any additional information with regards to the investigation,” said Const. Tanaska Armstrong.
