City fire crews were called to the Harmac pulp mill Tuesday afternoon to assist the mill's firefighters extinguish a blaze in a large pile of hog fuel.

Grant Brebber, a spokesman for the mill, said that with the assistance of Nanaimo’s fire crews, the blaze was brought quickly under control. Brebber said it's not uncommon for fires to break out by spontaneous combustion in the hog fuel due to compression over a long period of time.

He said the mill’s firefighters are vigilant and usually deal quickly with any fire outbreaks but there were concerns that the blaze was close to the roadway in the area and could ignite trees across the road.
