Nanaimo’s new chief administrative officer is a familiar face at city hall — he has worked there for 27 years.

Dale Lindsay starts the job on Oct. 2. He is currently serving as general manager of development services and as deputy chief administrative officer.

City council appointed Lindsay at an in-camera meeting on Sept. 7.

PFM Executive Search received interest from 68 applicants for the position left vacant by former CAO Jake Rudolph, who retired this summer after serving the city for five years.

Mayor Leonard Krog said: “Mr. Lindsay has demonstrated strong leadership not only at the city of Nanaimo, but within the community, and council is thrilled that he has accepted the position of chief administrative officer.”

“The respect he warrants and leadership he provides has been earned through his dedication to building and maintaining relationships internally and externally, always striving for governance excellence, providing mentorship to his colleagues and serving the community, mayor, council and staff with the utmost of integrity.”

Lindsay said he is honoured to take on the new role.

“I look forward to supporting our dedicated staff and to build on existing relationships with our many community partners who are key to the success of Nanaimo.”

Lindsay has worked for 29 years in local government, the city said. He has also served as Nanaimo’s director of community development from 2013 to 2019.

He graduated from the School of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Waterloo with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies.

He is a registered professional planner, a member of the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators and a member of the Local Government Management Association.
