New waterslide coming to Saanich Commonwealth Place

The new waterslide, expected to be installed next fall, will replace the current 31-year-old waterslide, which has been closed for a year

The three-decade-old waterslide at Saanich Commonwealth Place will remain closed until it can be replaced by another one next year.

It has not been in use since September 2023.

The waterslide was built in 1993 — when the Royal Oak-area recreation complex was built for the 1994 Commonwealth Games — and has reached the end of its lifespan, the District of Saanich said Friday.

“After reviewing information from engineers and the manufacturer, the district has determined that replacing the waterslide is necessary and will be releasing a request for proposals to procure a new slide later this month,” the district said.

It said a new waterslide is likely to be installed during the annual maintenance closure at Saanich Commonwealth Place, which happens each September.

The maintenance closure is usually for about two weeks — it has already happened for this year — but with the demolition and installation process needed for a waterslide, the 2025 closure would be approximately six weeks, the district said.
