One person has died and another was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a two-vehicle crash Thursday morning on West Saanich Road.
Saanich police said the driver and sole occupant of a Honda CRX was pronounced dead at the scene. The other vehicle involved was a Dodge Ram pickup, which also had only a driver.
The crash happened about 7:30 a.m. Thursday in the 5200-block of West Saanich Road.
“Unfortunately one of the drivers succumbed to their injuries and our thoughts are with their family today,” said Const. Markus Anastasiades. “It will take some time to investigate and determine the events that led up to the collision, as well as the cause of death.”
Closures were put in place at Interurban Road to the south and Sparton Road/Prospect Lake Road to the north, and West Saanich Road remained closed in both directions while officers investigated until mid-afternoon.
The B.C. Coroners Service was also at the scene.
Saanich Mayor Fred Haynes expressed his sadness at the death.
“As mayor of Saanich my heart goes out to the family,” he said. “There has been a loss. Anytime that happens, we know it’s someone’s son, daughter, mother, brother, sister, child, father.
“It’s a very tragic time.”
