Two residents and their cat escaped uninjured from a fire that caused “extensive damage” to a Nanaimo home Tuesday evening, said Assistant Chief David Dales of Nanaimo Fire Rescue.
Firefighters received multiple 911 calls about the fire around 6:45 p.m. The first engine crew to respond spotted flames several blocks from the residence on Eighth Street near Bruce Avenue.
Dales said 16 firefighters were initially involved in attacking the blaze, which had spread to the roof and soffits.
“Then they were able to have the fire knocked down to a point where they were able to go into overhaul mode, to make sure there was nothing that was going to cause future fire.”
Dales said the home had working smoke detectors that were effective in alerting the residents.
The homeowners were also insured, he said.
A neighbouring home has slight fire damage on one side, Dales said.
Fire investigators were at the scene Thursday, but no cause was immediately determined.
