A Central Saanich high school student is recovering at home after being attacked by several people wearing face coverings.

Central Saanich police were dispatched to Stelly’s Secondary School around 11:20 a.m. Friday for reports that a student was being assaulted in the school parking lot by a number of individuals hiding their identities with face coverings.

The attackers used weapons, including a knife and mallet, said Sgt. Paul Brailey, and are believed to be associated with an older black BMW sedan. It is not known if they are connected to the school.

The student was taken to hospital for treatment but is now recovering at home, police said.

Brailey said the incident is under investigation but police believe the assault was likely targeted.

Dave Eberwein, superintendent for the Saanich School District, said the incident is unsettling for students and staff.

“Of course we never want this or wish this upon any of our schools,” he said. “Our Stelly’s administration did a great job interacting with police and following protocols.

“Things were handled very well.”

Central Saanich police ask anyone who may have witnessed the assault to get in touch with them at 250-652-4441. Dashcam or other video footage can be uploaded to the department’s online evidence submission portal at bit.ly/3Oancbc.
