Uphill traffic on Strathcona Parkway backed up as skiers flock to Mount Washington

Fresh powder and a extended weekend have ignited a rush for the ski slopes, clogging traffic on the road leading to Mount Washington Alpine Resort.

Fresh powder and an extended weekend have ignited a rush for the ski slopes, clogging traffic on the road leading to Mount Washington Alpine Resort.

The resort tweeted Monday that its parking lots were full and traffic on the Strathcona Parkway leading up to the hill was backed up and now suspended, delaying shuttle bus service because of the volume of traffic.

Mount Washington was blanketed with 23 centimetres of fresh snow overnight, and 44 cm over the past 24 hours.

The resort has a 178 cm base and perfect conditions — no wind, good viability, partial sun and a temperature of minus 6 C.

“Everyone decided this extra holiday Monday after 44 cm of snow was the perfect time for a mountain adventure,” said a tweet from Mount Washington. “We appreciate your patience folks.”
