Wednesday proved especially busy for the Victoria Fire Department’s C Platoon as it responded to more than 34 emergency calls in a 24-hour period, ranging from motor-vehicle incidents to overdoses.

That’s just over double the call volume for an average day, said Acting Fire Chief Dan Atkinson.

Many calls were wind-related, including downed power lines and toppled trees, as well as a vehicle fire at David Street and Hillside Avenue that spread to other vehicles.

“The investigation remains open,” Atkinson said. “We know the heavy winds were a contributing factor to the rapid fire spread.

“It originally came in as a possible structure fire, but when we responded we realized that the fire was actually out back.”

The fire was near commercial buildings and homes, but was quickly suppressed.
