Sections of the Galloping Goose Regional Trail will be closed near the McKenzie interchange project from Monday until the end of November for paving and widening.
The project will cover about 1.2 kilometres of trail, and the width will ultimately vary from four to 6.5 metres, the Ministry of Transportation said in a statement. New lighting will be added near bus stops and schools.
The first section being worked on is expected to be closed from Monday through next Saturday. The closure runs from the pedestrian overpass across the Trans-Canada Highway to where the trail meets Burnside Road West, and includes the protected overpass crossing McKenzie Avenue, the ministry said.
During the closure, cyclists and pedestrians will detour onto Burnside Road West via Grange Road to the west, and where Burnside meets the trail in the east.
Students who use the pedestrian overpass across the highway to get to schools in the area will be still be allowed to do so, but are asked to obey signs and the direction of traffic-control staff.
All detours will be marked with signs.
Detour routes will change as the contractor moves to complete other sections of trail, the ministry said.
The second section to be worked on is still being confirmed and will follow immediately after.
The paving schedule has been planned to lessen night disruptions to residents in the area.
Cost of the trail work is part of the overall $96-million budget for the interchange.
