A gearbox problem has put the Spirit of Vancouver Island out of service, resulting in sailing disruptions.

The Spirit of Vancouver Island is out of service Thursday due to a mechanical problem, disrupting sailing schedules between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

While the Spirit of British Columbia, Coastal Celebration, and Queen of New Westminster are all providing service between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay today, some sailings remain cancelled, including the 2 p.m. departing Tsawwassen, 4 p.m. departing Swartz Bay and the 6 p.m. departing Tsawwassen.

The temporary loss of the Spirit of Vancouver Island also means reduced capacity. The Spirit of Vancouver Island has a capacity of 358 cars and 2,100 passengers and crew.

B.C. Ferries said customers with bookings on affected sailings will be notified and the ferry corporation will try to accommodate bookings on the next available sailing.

“If we are unable to accommodate, bookings will be cancelled and reservation fees refunded,” said B.C. Ferries in an an advisory.
