The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is examining whether the actions of an RCMP officer had any bearing on injuries sustained by a driver in Comox last week.
A Comox Valley RCMP officer driving north on Headquarters Road spotted a dark-coloured sedan speeding south north of Bridges Road shortly after noon on Friday.
The officer did a U-turn and tried to close the distance between the vehicles, the IIO said in a statement released Monday.
A short time later, the officer found a similar sedan on the side of the road. It had crashed into a utility pole.
A male believed to be the driver was found in a ditch a few metres away. Comox Valley RCMP said he was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash and the IIO, which reviews all police-involved incidents involving death or serious injury, is looking into whether police actions were linked to the injuries.
