Esquimalt’s new library, set inside the new town square development, is scheduled to open to the public on Thursday morning.
It replaces a branch that had been part of Esquimalt Municipal Hall.
Developed by Aragon Properties, its design features include floor-to-ceiling windows, high ceilings and exposed, natural-wood beams.
“Libraries are more than a place to borrow books,” said Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins at an event to announce the opening. “They are the hub of any community and we are so thrilled to welcome you into this new space.
“It’s bright, airy and will be a place for neighbours of all ages to gather for years to come.”
Greater Victoria Public Library chief executive Maureen Sawa noted that the children’s area has been designed to encourage discovery and safe play by children who are crawling or learning to walk.
It includes a play structure purchased with funds from the Friends of the Library, Sawa said.
Other features include wi-fi throughout the branch, bookable study rooms and public computers.
Visitors can enjoy the latest fiction and non-fiction books for adults, youth and children, audiobooks, video games, newspapers, magazines, and feature films and TV series on DVD and Blu-ray.
