Man killed in hit-and-run southeast of Nanaimo

The victim is believed to have been walking along the side of Harmac Road when he was hit by a driver who fled the scene, Nanaimo RCMP said.

Nanaimo RCMP are investigating after a man was struck and killed in a hit-and-run Thursday evening southeast of the city.

The man was hit around 7 p.m. on Harmac Road just east of the Cedar Road Bridge and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The initial investigation suggests the man was walking along the side of the road when he was hit by a driver who fled the scene, police said.

The road was closed overnight to allow investigators to examine the scene and collect forensic evidence.

Police are seeking dashcam footage from anyone in the area between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in an effort to identify the driver and vehicle involved.
