The City of Nanaimo and District of Saanich have been recognized for being leaders in environmental action and transparency.
Each earned an “A” from the non-profit Climate Disclosure Project, which has headquarters in London, U.K., and offices around the globe.
The organization based its grades on environmental data submitted by 1,002 local governments in North America to CDP- ICLEI track, a climate reporting platform. Among all submissions, only 12 per cent earned the top ranking.
To reach that level, local governments must publicly disclose climate goals and actions and have a community-wide emissions inventory. They must also have published a climate action plan, identified climate-related hazards and have a climate adaptation plan.
Saanich and Nanaimo are the only two local governments in B.C. to earn the top rating.
Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog said the city has brought in programs and policies to help cut back on community greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt to the impact of climate change.
