Police have carried out searches at a residence and a business in connection with the death of a Port Hardy man last weekend.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit is investigating the death, deemed to be a homicide. The victim has been identified by friends as 84-year-old Real Menard, according to CHEK News.

A candlelight vigil was held for Menard Thursday in Port Hardy, near where he was found on a trail, CHEK reported.

The case began Sunday, when Port Hardy RCMP received a report just after 4:30 p.m. about an injured person who was believed to have been assaulted.

Police said it was believed to have been a targeted incident and there was no ongoing risk to the public.

The victim died later in hospital.

Port Hardy Mayor Pat Corbett-Labatt did not speak about the victim’s identity but said she is “incredibly sad and upset” at the death.

“My thoughts are with the family and friends affected during this incredibly difficult time,” she said. “As a community, we trust that the RCMP will uncover the truth as they investigate this devastating incident.”
