A rainfall warning is in effect for West Vancouver Island.

Environment Canada issued a warning early Monday for heavy rain over the northwestern sections of Vancouver Island, particularly near Zeballos and Tahsis.

The rain is expected to continue throughout the day.

Rainfall accumulations are estimated to be as much as 100 mm and localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Environment Canada advises people to watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

The heavy rainfall, which has already begun, is the result of a moisture-laden frontal system, says the weather forecaster.

The heavy rain is forecast to ease to scattered showers tonight.
