A Nanaimo woman’s act of kindness may have helped save her neighbour’s life.

Nicki Wilson called Nanaimo RCMP on Monday asking them to check on her neighbour, Bob, whom she had not seen in five days. She had dropped off some Christmas baking for him, but the parcel sat untouched on his front porch. Concerned, she decided to call the local detachment for help.

Wilson said Bob is very kind and, given his age and the fact he lives alone, everyone in the neighbourhood keeps an eye out for him.

A Nanaimo RCMP officer who went to Bob’s apartment looked through the window and saw the 83-year-old lying motionless on the bathroom floor. It’s believed he may have been in medical distress for upwards of five days.

After forcing the front door open, the officer called for an ambulance that transported Bob to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. His current condition is unknown.

The incident shows the value of “Check Well-Being” calls, said Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP. “If it had not been for Nicki’s parcel and her concern for her neighbour, this may have been an entirely different outcome.”

O’Brien said Wilson hopes to be able to give Bob his parcel when he leaves the hospital.
