Victoria police say they found 400 drivers going 11 kilometres an hour or more over the speed limit in school zones in the first few weeks of classes, and still more were pulled over or warned.
Police issued 35 tickets during the school-zone campaign from Sept. 3-25. Nineteen vehicles were clocked at more than 2o km/h over the limit.
The number of drivers going too fast in school zones “is not acceptable and clearly our work isn’t finished,” police said in a statement.
Volunteers and traffic officers visited every school in the area last month, VicPD said.
The campaign has given police information on which areas will require more attention.
The speed limit in school zones is 30 km/h from 8 a.m-5 p.m. on school days, while the speed limit in playground zones is 30 km/h every day from dawn to dusk.
Speeding fines in both zones begin at $196 and rise as speed increases.
